Redefining corporate eLearning through experience-driven design

The Challenge

A global organisation set out to increase adoption of everyday digital tools, such as Microsoft Teams, as part of a wider digital skills initiative. The initial plan focused on a series of webinars, but it quickly became clear that this wouldn’t be enough to change behaviour at scale.

They wanted to explore a more engaging approach — using gamification to support real skill-building at work. While the idea sparked interest, there was understandable hesitation. Many employees still associate eLearning with long, uninspiring “click-next” experiences, and this approach would be a first of its kind within the organisation.

Some early content had already been created, but several challenges stood in the way:

  • A lengthy, overly complex storyline

  • An interface that wasn’t intuitive for learners

  • Activities that were only partially developed

With a 30-day deadline to deliver, this project became an opportunity to prove that eLearning could be engaging, effective, and enjoyable

The Approach

Before jumping into production, we broke down the content to understand:

→ Who the learners were.

→ The purpose of the training.

→ Learning objectives and business goals.

This helped us make smart design decisions quickly, balancing creativity with practicality.

Given the tight timeline, we used AI tools to generate baseline characters and environments, refining them for a consistent look and feel.

Instead of animated characters — which would have been both time-consuming and distracting — we used text, sound, and still visuals to create immersion without unnecessary complexity.

Learners stepped into the role of the hero, helping a music band collaborate using Microsoft Teams apps to create a hit song — a playful metaphor for effective teamwork and digital collaboration.

And yes, the band really performs at the end 🎵

The Results

The course exceeded internal completion targets by 6% and achieved an average satisfaction rating of 4.8/5 — scoring 14% higher than comparable programmes within the organisation.

But the most meaningful outcome went beyond the numbers. The work helped reframe eLearning from a checkbox exercise into a meaningful learning experience. Learners described the course as genuinely engaging, enjoyable, and emotionally resonant, challenging long-held “click-next” assumptions often associated with workplace eLearning.
